The A-Z Challenge continues as we slowly drift to and end.
T is for Adventure Time.
Adventure Time is an amazing, surreal show. My husband is actually the first one who introduced me to this show back in 2011. It’s a strange show for sure, but underneath all the strangeness it has got a lot of depth. It also has many characters, in a fantastic crazy world, and has also been known to do some gender bending episodes.
Here’s the premise. A human named Finn and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake the Dog are heroes. They protect the citizens of the Land of Ooo from various foes. The side characters are seriously endless. The adventures are always fun, but tend to get more serious, especially as Finn grows older. The show touches on serious topics, such as mental illness, absent parents, fears, and much more.
I will also say, that this show almost single handedly made me buy a ukulele. There’s so many amazing songs from this show that I’ve learnt to play.
The theme song is catchy and so fun to play.
This doesn’t really work on ukulele, but I love this song regardless. Also, it goes more into Marceline’s and Ice King’s complicated past relationship.
This is my personal favourite song to play. Its on the gender bending episode of Fionna and Cake. Also, Neil Patrick Harris!
Another song from another gender bending episode. This time Donald Glover!!
Shall we look at some random quotes?
This show is weird. If you don’t like weird cartoons, then this won’t be your thing. Anyway, there are hundreds of characters. Let’s look at the main characters.
Finn the Human (Voiced by Jeremy Shada)
Finn loves adventures and saving the day. He wears a hat which covers his insanely long and luscious blond hair. He is prone to yelling things like “Mathematical!” when good things happen. As a child, he was abandoned and ended up being adopted by Jake’s parents. He originally has an unrequited crush on Princess Bubblegum.
Jake the Dog (voiced by John diMaggio)
Jake is Finn’s best friend and adoptive brother. He is 28, so is seen as a mentor and constantly gives (sometimes questionable) advice to his little bro. He is also a magical shape shifter, able to transform his body into any shape, big or small. This comes in handy for transportation and combat purposes, but he uses it for any reason. He’s a bit more laidback than Finn.
Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch)
Princess Bubblegum is a humanoid made out of bubblegum. She is the princess and loves science. She’s very clever, and does lots of experiments. She never really returns Finn’s affections as she considers him a child. She is a fair ruler for the most part, but later she begins to get a lot more devious and dark.
Marceline the Vampire Queen (voiced by Olivia Olson)
Marceline is over 1000 years old, although she appears as a teenager. She is often playing her axe bass, made from a family heirloom axe. She’s a prankster for the most part. She has a complicated relationship with her father, the demonic ruler of the Nightosphere, who wants her to follow his footsteps. She knew Ice King as a human, and because of this she has a soft spot for Ice King, even though he doesn’t remember her.
Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny)
The usual antagonist of the series. Ice King is over 1000 years old and always steals princesses trying to get them to marry him (he normally goes for Princess Bubblegum). His ice powers come from his magic crown. Kinda crazy and insane, but always thwarted by Jake and Finn, we later learn more about his background. Before the Mushroom war 1000 years ago, he was a human. He finds the crown, and as he wears it more, it slowly deteriorates his body and his mind, making him the villain he is now. He met young Marcelline just after the Mushroom war and looked after her, but he left when he realized what the crown was doing to him.
So yeah, those are the main characters. There are heeeeaps of side characters, but I can’t get into all of them as this would never end. I haven’t watched this show in a while, but I do really like it and have a soft spot for it. Especially since it’s so weird.
That’s all for T. U will be coming up next Tuesday.
